Low-Impact Exercise Ideas
While you may think that only high-impact activities have a high enough intensity level to count as a cardio workout, there are a number of different things that you can do with less impact that still make a beneficial difference to your body. No matter what you choose, it is still important to participate in a cardio workout several times per week to keep you healthy and strong.
There are several reasons that a person may choose to participate in low-impact exercise rather than something more intense. First, age can take its toll on the cushioning in your joints, preventing your ability to pound the pavement if you’re a runner. Secondly, some disease can also wear away at your cartilage and make it difficult to work out. Lastly, other conditions such a pregnancy or even just preference may make you turn towards low-impact exercises.
If you are no longer able to run, walking is still a great way to make your heart pump if you do it correctly. Power walking involves taking fast, smooth strides and working your arms like a runner so that your whole body gets into the workout. Even though this is less impact than running, it can be just as beneficial for your heart and body.
Additionally, swimming is a very popular low-impact option. Not only does this protect your joints, it also prevents pregnant bellies from bouncing dangerously. It works different muscle groups than those used when power walking, as well.
Lastly, workouts that focus on strength and flexibility such as Pilates and yoga can also provide your heart with exercise, depending on what type of yoga or Pilates you choose. Additionally, these have the added benefit of stretching out your muscles as they work.
