Natural vs. Organic Food Products
When standing in the produce aisle at the grocery store, you have probably noticed the wide variety of choices available. Not only are there multiple kinds of apples, but you can also choose between an organic apple and a regular apple. Additionally, some other foods boast a “natural” label. What is the difference between these products?

Certified Organic
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, or USDA, examines food to determine if it is truly organic. To be organic, a product must be grown, handled, and processed in a way that reflects conscientious environmental practices. Additionally, no chemicals may be used. For example, an organic farmer would utilize manure or compost for fertilizer rather than the chemicals used by a conventional farm.
There are three levels of organic labeling, which include:
- 100% organic – products are completely organic
- Organic – products are 95% organic
- Made with organic ingredients – products include 70% organic ingredients
“Natural” Items
Technically, “natural” is a term or label that is not regulated by the government. A label may describe a product as natural to emphasize the fact that it was grown or processed in a way that did not involve chemicals, but a food production company could merely use this term without following USDA organic standards.
